“Alana’s ‘The Important Stuff’: Children Speak Out for Climate Action at COP28”
In a compelling plea for climate action, children from around the globe are urging COP28 negotiators to move beyond rhetoric and take tangible steps to combat the climate crisis. UNICEF and Alana have collaborated to present “The Important Stuff,” a poignant project featuring testimonies from children and adolescents worldwide, shedding light on the profound impact of the climate emergency on their lives.
Children’s Voices Amplified
The films, a collaborative effort between UNICEF, Alana, and Fbiz agency, showcase 25 children’s testimonies from 12 countries, echoing their experiences and calling for decisive measures. These impactful voices are set to be heard alongside traditionally suited representatives at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai until December 12th.
Children: The Most Vulnerable to Climate Emergency
Children, constituting one-third of the world’s population, are disproportionately affected by the climate emergency. Over 1 billion children live in areas exposed to severe climate risks, particularly in the Global South. Alarmingly, more than 1 in 4 deaths of children under 5 are attributed to unhealthy environments globally. Despite these staggering figures, COP agendas and negotiations historically overlook or exclude children, who stand to bear the long-term consequences of climate decisions.
A Landmark Moment at COP28
In an unprecedented move, the films are scheduled to be shown at the Al Wasl Plaza dome in Dubai on December 8th, marking a pivotal moment where children’s voices will resonate directly with world leaders.
Children’s Genuine Concerns
From Madagascar to Brazil, the films capture authentic expressions of concern from children worldwide. When asked whether adults are doing enough to address climate change, their responses are unequivocal:
- “I would like to say yes, but they are not,” asserts Yehansa from Australia.
- Hidaya from Somalia bluntly states, “I don’t think adults do anything about climate change.”
- Sadie from the United States urges, “Stop fighting and let’s focus on what really matters.”
- Raoni from Brazil starkly warns, “If you keep burning, we’re going to die in this heat.”
The children’s poignant statements emphasize the urgency for immediate, impactful solutions from global leaders.
A Call for Immediate Solutions
These young voices are a collective call to action, with heartfelt statements such as “Stop thinking and do something once and for all” and “Climate change has ruined my life.” The films not only capture the stark realities but also implore leaders to prioritize tangible actions over discussions.
A Campaign for Impactful Change
Published on December 07, 2023, under the banner of “The Important Stuff,” this campaign by Alana, crafted in collaboration with Fbiz, is more than a poignant appeal—it is a resounding call for immediate and impactful change. By giving children a platform to express their genuine concerns, the campaign aims to catalyze concrete actions and policy decisions that prioritize the well-being of future generations in the face of the escalating climate crisis.
