If you’ve ever tried to find images of black girls surfing online, you might have noticed a shocking lack of representation. Until recently, major commercial image archives offered very few—if any—images of young black female surfers. But thanks to the groundbreaking collaboration between Betclic, Shutterstock Studios, and Soma Surf, that’s all changing.
The initiative, titled “Surfing Through the Odds,” aims to address the significant inclusion gap in the representation of black girls in surfing imagery. Partnering with Shutterstock Studios and Soma Surf, Betclic launched the first-ever collection of images featuring black girls surfing, available in a major commercial image bank.
The idea behind the collection is not just to fill a void in representation but also to support the incredible work being done by Soma Surf in São Tomé, Africa. Founded by Francisca Sequeira, the Soma Surf Project uses surf therapy to empower girls in São Tomé, a country where educational opportunities for girls are limited. Since its inception, Soma Surf has helped over 90 girls, including 13-year-old Maura, São Tomé’s first female surfing champion.
The collection, consisting of 33 videos and over 100 photos, was created in collaboration with Soma Surf students and showcases the beauty and strength of black girls surfing. Available on Shutterstock since last year, the collection has already garnered interest from buyers in over 35 countries. Proceeds from the sale of the images contribute to financing Soma Surf’s important work.
As part of the “Surfing Through the Odds” initiative, a documentary was also produced, shedding light on the story of Soma Surf and the lives of female surfers in São Tomé. Directed by Ana-Filipa Domingues, the documentary has been showcased at events and film festivals worldwide, including the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
This groundbreaking campaign, titled “Surfing Through the Odds – Soma Surf Collection,” is not just about representation; it’s about empowerment and social change. By showcasing black girls surfing and supporting the vital work of Soma Surf, Betclic, Shutterstock Studios, and Soma Surf are making a real difference in the lives of girls in São Tomé and beyond.
Published in Portugal in March 2024, this digital campaign represents a powerful collaboration between brands and organizations committed to promoting diversity, inclusion, and female empowerment. With its impactful message and stunning imagery, “Surfing Through the Odds” is a testament to the transformative power of surfing and the importance of representation in media.
