In today’s digital age, social media influencers wield significant influence, often showcasing their glamorous lifestyles and jet-setting adventures to millions of followers. However, behind the glossy facade lies a harsh reality: excessive air travel contributes significantly to carbon emissions, exacerbating climate change. To address this issue head-on, myclimate, a renowned NGO dedicated to climate protection, has launched a groundbreaking campaign: the myclimate Carbon Tracker.
The premise of the campaign is simple yet impactful: using innovative technology, myclimate tracks the travel activities of over 1000 influencers and celebrities by analyzing location markers in their social media posts. Developed in collaboration with Jung von Matt HAVEL and Championship Records, the myclimate Carbon Tracker intelligently identifies flights based on the distance between two location-tagged posts and calculates the resulting carbon emissions. Armed with this data, the Carbon Tracker generates personalized comments, urging influencers to reconsider their travel choices and suggesting donations to climate projects as a means of offsetting their carbon footprint.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of excessive air travel while encouraging influencers to take responsibility for their emissions. By publicly confronting influencers on their own social media platforms, myclimate hopes to spark a conversation about sustainable travel practices and the importance of reducing carbon emissions.
“We only use data that the celebrities themselves publish,” explains Kai Landwehr, myclimate marketing manager. “Our ‘service’ consists of an automated posting on their Instagram profile, directing them to our emissions calculator and encouraging them to support climate protection projects.”
The myclimate Carbon Tracker has already made waves in the world of social media, confronting high-profile figures like Paris Hilton, Katy Perry, 50 Cent, Jack Harlow, and Beyoncé about their travel behavior. The campaign’s impact extends beyond individual influencers, with myclimate launching an influencer CO2 ranking to shed light on the environmental impact of celebrity travel.
“It’s about questioning a certain lifestyle that flaunts inflationary air travel, for all of us,” says Arne Stach, creative director at Jung von Matt HAVEL.
As part of the campaign, myclimate has also released a short film showcasing the initial reactions of influencers confronted by the Carbon Tracker. By highlighting the disconnect between glamorous travel imagery and its environmental consequences, the film underscores the urgent need for collective action to combat climate change.
In addition to its advocacy efforts, myclimate is committed to driving meaningful change through advisory services, educational programs, and climate projects. With a focus on market-oriented and customer-centric solutions, myclimate collaborates with industry partners, businesses, and individuals to implement effective climate protection strategies.
As the world grapples with the growing threat of climate change, initiatives like the myclimate Carbon Tracker play a crucial role in raising awareness, promoting sustainable practices, and empowering individuals to make a positive impact on the planet. Through collective action and innovation, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
