Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to Bahrain’s environment, particularly its marine life. Despite efforts to raise awareness, plastic bag usage remains prevalent, leading to harmful consequences. In response, STC Bahrain initiated the “Stop Feeding the Animals” campaign to address this pressing issue.
The Problem:
Bahrain, like many other regions, faces a persistent problem with plastic bag usage. Shoppers routinely use excessive plastic bags, particularly during weekly shopping trips. Each fruit and vegetable is individually bagged, resulting in a significant accumulation of plastic waste. Despite ongoing awareness efforts, consumer behavior has not shifted, perpetuating environmental harm and wastefulness.
To visually reinforce the severity of this issue, a series of key visuals were developed for the campaign. These visuals depict plastic bags cleverly arranged to resemble words, creating the illusion of food for marine creatures.
The Idea:
Recognizing Bahrain’s vulnerability to plastic pollution as an island nation, STC Bahrain aimed to raise awareness and instigate change. The campaign’s centerpiece involved the creation of large sculptures of native sea creatures ingesting plastic waste. These sculptures served as a poignant reminder of the detrimental impact of plastic pollution on marine life.
In addition to highlighting the problem, the campaign also proposed a solution. Reusable bags, designed with informative statistics about plastic pollution and resembling marine creatures, were distributed. These bags not only provided a practical alternative to single-use plastic bags but also served as constant reminders of the damage caused by plastic pollution.
To complement these efforts, impactful key visuals were developed. These visuals depicted marine creatures consuming plastic bags shaped into words, effectively conveying the message that mistaken ingestion of plastic poses a grave threat to marine life.
Conclusion:
STC Bahrain’s “Stop Feeding the Animals” campaign represents a proactive approach to addressing plastic pollution in Bahrain. Through impactful sculptures, reusable bags, and compelling visuals, the campaign aims to raise awareness, change consumer behavior, and ultimately mitigate the harmful effects of plastic pollution on the environment and marine life.
